Saturday - June 28

Bob: Went fishing with Branch President, Karl Jakob. We went clear out past Matachewan which was about an hour from here. (Saw the same 2 bears on the way there that Bonnie and I saw) He waded in the water to get the boat launched as water was very shallow near shore.
Starting fishing with a jig and a worm. On my second cast I caught one. We kept catching them pretty quickly. One broke my line so I decided to try using a plastic white tail on the jig. The fish tore into that like they had never seen one. We ended up catching several smallmouth bass and three pike. Had to begin throwing some of the bass back as we had too many.
The most exciting part of the trip is when we were leaving. We were in the shallow water and Karl was in the back of the boat standing up arranging his gear just before he was going to get out. I moved to my right to do something which caused the boat to tilt to the right. I heard "Oh, oh..." I turned around to see Karl falling backwards out of the boat! We had a good laugh over it and he went for an additional swim.
After we got loaded up Karl took me on a tore of several lakes in the area. There is a huge one, Mistinikon Lake, that I want to go back and fish. Karl said the locals said it is the best. You can see it on Google Maps west of Matachewan on route 566.

Weather has been beautiful all week. Only had a few sprinkles on Tuesday, but we missed them as we were in New Liskeard shopping. I probably changed the outlook for this coming week as I washed the truck one we got home.

Here is picture of one of the bears:

One of smaller ones that we had to throw back because of limit restrictions.

Our catch for the day. Wasn't a lot of fun cleaning them!! (Taken just before Karl took the plunge!)

Bonnie: There is a great celebration in New Liskeard today and tomorrow.  It is the Biker Reunion/ Ride for Cancer.  Last summer there were 8000 bikers on their motorcycles here.  This summer they expect more than that!  So Pat, the Branch President's wife, and her four foster children and I went into town to participate in the fun. There were lots of interesting things for the kids to do, and lots of food booths, jewelry and art booths, and beautiful refurbished old cars. It was fun to see them race the motorcycles in one area and also watch some roller skaters race in another area.  We went back to Pat's house and then waited for our husbands.  We waited and waited and waited. We went ahead and had dinner. We were concerned because this was the first time fishing for the Br. Pres. since a heart attack where he had 4 stints put in.  Finally about 5:30 or 6 they pulled  with their catch of 14 or 15 fish.
Tomorrow after church we may watch the bikers on their ride for cancer pass in front of the church.  Some of the members are bringing lunches to eat while they watch.  The worry is that we may not be able to leave the church until the ride passes.

Hubert Lake

Took Bonnie out to Hubert Lake this morning. It was 0.7 miles off the dirt road. Pictures of the road are below. When we stopped at the lake Bonnie was only out of the truck for about 30 seconds are she jumped back in. Bugs really like her!! On the main highway, Route 65, we saw 2 bears eating along side the road. I was considering riding my bike out that way but I'm having second thoughts now!! We have seen several otters swimming across the river. Saw one make 2 trips the other night carrying one of her young on each trip.

My (Bonnie's) comment:  But I took the best and only picture of the Hubert Lake sign! This was quite the exploration.  I was really worried we would not get back, the road was so bad.  It looked like it hadn't been used in years. You can't tell how bad it was by the pictures.
Tonight we went fishing and Bob caught 4 fish.  I caught mucky stuff on the bottom!  He caught 2 walleye, which I love to eat.  They don't even taste like fish, they are so mild. He also caught a pike and a little perch which he threw back into the river.  Well, the mosquito coil has been lit.  It's time for bed, so I'll let Bob finish up.

Bob: Just had a visit from the Branch President. He and I are going fishing tomorrow. Bonnie and his wife are going to New Liskeard to check out among other things, the Bikers Reunion!! While cleaning the fish tonight one of the natives gave me directions where to go to catch walleye. Its about 4 miles down river and he said they bite like crazy in the afternoon. That would be nice to not clean fish at dark when you have to fight mosquitoes.

Below are pictures from our Hubert Lake trip.

Friday Morning June 27

Crowd hasn't started arriving yet. We thought we would try to add some pictures so here goes.
This is our boat. Captain sits in back by motors and 1st mate sits in front seat. She lets me play captain, but she is the boss.

This is where "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay" has some meaning. Caught first walleye here.

This is our cabin.

Will add more later.

Love, Bob and Bonnie

Thursday night, 26th

Hey everyone, hope you had a great day. Ours was great. Up at 8, exercise, shower, pancake breakfast and outside by 10:30. Spent the morning trying to get the blog up and running. How frustrating for this generation!! Finally decided to go for a bike ride to work off the anxiety! Came back and got Bonnie so she could ride too. We rode the 4 miles into town and then went around town some. Met the Branch President's wife yesterday when we rode into town. Had a walleye dinner tonight. Think Bonnie has been converted from trout. Went fishing off the dock (where I caught walleye 2 nights ago). No bites tonight. Canadian National Bird drove us inside at 9:15. Presently it is 68 degrees. Bonnie had to wear a jacket to fish tonight. I'll have Bonnie add her comments as soon as she can tear herself away from her book.
Any questions about what the Canadian National Bird is? The mosquito, of course.  We heard tonight that the mosquitoes cannot see yellow and other light colors, so when we go into town next time I'm going to get a yellow jacket and t-shirt and anything else I can find with light colors.  I have about a dozen bites--on my neck and head, including two bad ones on my legs.  They really seem to like me!  We've settled in well, I think, especially after I bought two Walmart flower arrangements, some tablecloths and placemats to liven up our cabin! It's been very quiet so far, but we understand that there will be a reunion here tomorrow with at least 60 people.  There are 10 cabins plus lots of places for campers. I'm sure it won't be quiet here for long!  Well, my book calls.  I'm reading "Dune" by Frank Herbert.  I know Dan and Misty have read it.  Anyone else?  More tomorrow....

Mom's Addition

Hello, everyone! What an adventure we are having! I'm sitting in a comfortable
deck chair by the dock typing this message. It's a pleasant afternoon. We have rented a rustic cabin here. I say rustic because it's small and looks old from the outside, yet it has everything we need. It's so beautiful here! We'll send some pictures as time goes on.
I hope all is well with each of you. Love to all!

To Date

Its Thursday, June 26. Not much going on today except monumental frustration trying to get a blog started so we can keep in contact. May have it now. Let us know if you find this on the web. Later, Bob
